In Lithuania, the people to live side by side with spirits from the world beyond. You can find eerie manors and spooky castles in this country. There are many ghostly tales to hear and places to visit. These tales give the shivers to many people and make you truly believe that you might just be standing next to an apparition and not even realize it.

Tragic Love

At Paezeriai Manor in the Pearl of Sudovia region, there are stories about an innocent maiden who was, unfortunately, a victim of a tragic love story. This legend dates back to the 19th century when a wealthy landlord named Zigmantas Gauronskis and a young maid has a secret affair. Everything was fine until she became pregnant. Gauronskis did not want to have a conflict with his wife so he sent the maid to another manor. The maid could not live with a broken heart so she brought her newborn child back to Gauronskis' manor and left the baby on the doorstep. Then she took her own life in the nearby lake. Up to this very day, her ghostly spirit roams the manor at night and in the mornings a white shadow is seen in the park.

Trapped In a Tower Wall

At Siesikai Castle near the city of Ukmerge, the young wife who was married to one of the Duamantai dukes fell in love with a knight from another country. At night she would leave the castle for a secret rendezvous with the knight by the shores of Lake Siesikai. When the duke discovered what his wife was doing he sentenced her to be bricked up in the tower walls until her dying day. The people who live nearby say they can see the ghostly apparition of the duchess walking by the lake during the night waiting for her knight.

Summoning Ghosts

The Villa Anapilis has been restored and is open to the public. It has connections to the paranormal. There is a legend in the resort town of Palanga that when Countess Sofija Tiskeviciene lived there she summoned ghosts to come and visit. She had built a secret room of mirrors where once the summoned spirits came they could no longer return to their spirit world. When the countess died her apparition could be seen wandering about the villa and a wind organ was heard playing in the house. The sound of the wind organ was what helped the Countess Sofija to calm down when she was in ill health.

Ghostly Encounters

At Radviloniai Manor that once belonged to the noble Radvilos family of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the present landlady Irena Raince has ghost stories to tell. She says that many spirits reside there. Late at night when she has retired a spirit would appear and ask her for something. Once the wish was fulfilled and the spirit got what it was looking for it never returned. So with time, the landlady got used to this and never felt as if she was alone.

The Restless Soul

Kretinga Manor has become known as the home of the spirit of Ignotas Massalskis. He was the Clerk of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the senator, the Chairman of the Educational Commission and the Bishop of Vilnius when he inherited 43 acres of land and a manor back in 1769. He enjoyed living there so much that to this day he refuses to leave and roams about the manor.

A Mischievous Ghost

Today Rokiskis Manor House is a regional museum and also the playground of a mischievous spirit, who in life was 16-year-old Jasius Plezdzieckis. He was the son of a well-known Rosiskis Count. Even though during the day the paintings hang correctly on the walls of the museum after the ghostly spirit has had its fun during the night the paintings are all tilted to the right or the left.

Souls of Witches

Berzenai Manor in the Kelme District was left abandoned when there were no funds to renovate it and thus it was left empty for ghostly spirits to roam. The locals tell the story of the former owner Stanislovas Gorskis, who had written a letter listing all the names of those accused of being witches to be burned on Birze Hill. A heavy and somber feeling is felt around this manor and those who walk here feel as if the souls of the accused witches still roam about.
