Mary the Vampire
Mary was a premed student major in Molecular Biology at Rockport University in the city of Rockport. Mary was tall with light brown hair and eyes as blue as the sea. She had a bubbly personality that everyone including her boyfriend Rick loved. Her last class of the day was Organic Chemistry with Professor Hastings. Professor Hastings was a mid-sized man in his early sixties. He was known to be domineering, rude, and capricious and enjoyed making his students feel stupid. Whenever students would greet him in the hall or in his office he would respond, “What the hell do you want?” Since he had been at the University for thirty years and had made millions for the University through his research he was tolerated.
“What are you doing?” Professor Hastings growled at Mary this dark, stormy faithful evening. Mary was trying to understand the lecture Professor Hastings just gave on Friedel–Crafts Acylation and the good professor could tell she was having trouble understanding it. After explaining that she did not understand and a few students mentioned they were having trouble Professor Hastings face grew red and he exclaimed, “How could you people not understand? Time is up, just go home and look it up on your computers. I tell you, you young people are something else.” The students got up mumbling curses at Dr. Hastings and he caught a few but simply walked out of the class with a big smile on his wrinkled face.
Mary was so angry at the way she was spoken to that she did not pay attention to the fact she walked down the wrong street in the pouring rain. A loud thunder struck and she got so startled that she dropped her umbrella. As she bent over to pick it up she noticed a man hiding behind trees, which frighten Mary. She could not see the man’s face due to the darkness and the rain so she walked away as fast as she could. She saw the man run towards her but it was too late. The man grabbed her and before she could do anything he had bitten into her
neck. He drained enough of her blood to get her heart beat to slow down and then using his fingernails on his right hand he made a small incision on his left wrist and made Mary drink his blood. Mary could feel his blood entering her body and could feel power and strength she never felt before.
Rick was frantic when Mary did not show up that night so he called the police. “Please help my girlfriend is missing, please come,” Rick cried over the phone in desperation. The police arrived an hour and half later do ask Rick questions. Tom Bainer was one of the officers that showed up and by this time Jamal Quinton, Rick’s roommate, had shown up and was apprised of the situation. Tom had been with the police force for nearly four years since he came to town. He was of average size, with dark blue eyes and blond hair. He kept his head and face cleaned shaven and had a bad habit of chewing gum. No one saw Tom without gum in his mouth. Jamal was the same age as Rick and they met eight months ago after Jamal moved from Morthman Valley. Jamal had black hair and eyes and was very mature for his age. Jamal always carried a copy of the book The Drama of Life, which was his favorite and watching YouTUbe video’s created by Ferrari King.
After eyeing Rick for a few seconds and looking him up and down he began, “I hear you had an argument with your girlfriend last night and now she’s missing.”
“Yes we had an argument but couple argue please just find her,” replied Rick shaken from the question.
“We will do our best but she is not the first person to go missing. Seems like a few people have went missing in the past few days and we have recovered most of them in Pitcher Lake,” Officer Bainer replied without showing any emotion or concern. After an hour of questioning the police left and Rick was now pale white from fear, not just from his girlfriend missing but also from the fact he may be considered a suspect.
“Don’t worry, Rick, they will find her safe,” replied Jamal putting one hand on Ricks shoulder trying to comfort him. Rick went the entire next day frantic and watching everywhere for Mary. That night he heard a loud knock on the front door and went to answer it. It was Mary with fresh blood on her lips and before Rick could hug her, she sidestepped and went for the refrigerator. She grabbed the meat and drank any blood that has accumulated while both Jamal and Rick looked at her in amazement. Rick tried to ask Mary what happened but she would not talk and Jamal noticed her canine teeth being longer and sharper than before. Rick went to call Officer Bainer as he was instructed and was notified that Tom would be there after he looked into a few missing animal cases. Apparently a few animals had gone missing during the day and Tom was talking to nervous owners. Mary could not keep her eyes off Rick without wanting to rip open his throat and drink his blood so she went immediately upstairs. She had terrible dreams of draining Rick and Jamal. Her dreams were so vivid that when she awoke she thought they were real.
Officer Bainer arrived within an hour after Mary showed with a doctor to examine her. “She seems fine except she has a bradycardia, or a slow heartbeat, and her body temperature is a bit lower than it should be. Her breathing is somewhat shallow but she is fine otherwise,” replied the doctor then he left after asking for her to stop by his office in a few days for follow up and to look into her heartbeat. Tom tried to inquire about what happened the night before but could not get much out of Mary so he told Rick to call him if anything should come up.
The next day Mary woke up late but was feeling much better so she went to class before Rick or Jamal could wake up and stop her. Her last class was Organic Chemistry with Professor Hastings. “Where were you last night? You did not show up for my lab and now you show up to class!” yelled Professor Hastings in his usual voice that broke so many students. “You stupid vulgar, obstinate old man, I was attacked after your class that’s why I did not come yesterday. If you could shut that arrogant mouth of yours for one minute and listen to your students you might learn something such as you’re not as smart as you think you are. Sure you know Organic Chemistry but that is all you know.
You know nothing of human behavior, how to teach or how to talk to anyone. You should be grateful to have a job you insolent little pig,” Mary yelled with fluency that she never had before. She was never bold enough to stand up to Professor Hastings or anyone and the entire class cheered her on. “Well then missy you can then just leave my class and never come back,” shouted Professor Hastings in triumph since he knew the college would take his side and his word was law. At that moment Mary leaped at Professor Hastings and ripped open his throat and drank his blood. A few minutes later she was outside and realizes she had only imagined ripping open Professor Hastings throat.
The next day Rick and Mary got a call from Tom to come to the police station for questioning and Jamal decided to come along. “Did you have some words with Professor Hastings last night, Mary?” inquired Tom. “Yes.” “Did you know that Professor Hastings was found dead in his office and his lab last night?” inquired Officer Bainer. “No, how would I know that?” asked Mary nervously. By this time Mary could hear the flies buzzing outside and hear the heartbeats of anyone within a few yards. She did notice the heartbeats of the people in the room with her though since she was too afraid of what had happened to Professor Hastings and her the night before. “How was he found in both his office and his lab?” asked Jamal. “Simple whoever killed Professor Hastings ripped him apart. They pulled out his intestines and tore off his arms and legs and made sure he suffered. The amazing thing is there is no blood anywhere. Not a drop,” replied Tom in amazement at the question. “That’s amazing that there would be no blood,” replied Jamal to Tom but looking at Rick and Mary. At this time Mary was getting hungry for something but she did not know what and the whole time she was eyeing Tom and getting frustrated at his questions. “We have to interview all of Professor Hastings’ students and co-workers. In all my years I never knew a man to be so universally hated by everyone. No one seems to have the slightest care that he is dead or how he died,” replied Tom with a sinister smile. She remembered how vivid her day dream about killing Hastings was and then it came true. She felt it better not to mention this to anyone and when the three got home she went out on her own. She would come in and out of delirium and kept fantasying or thought she was that she was drinking the blood from animals.
“Rick, I really must speak to you about your girl Mary while she is gone out,” replied Jamal with a sense of urgency in his voice.
“What about her?” replied Rick.
“Did you notice her canines are larger than normal and all she has had for nourishment was blood and of course the two circular wounds on her neck?” “Yes, I have noticed, what about it?
“I think your girl was attacked by a vampire and I know how that sounds but trust me I have more experience then you may think.”
“A vampire, really Jamal?”
“Yes and I can prove it when she comes back home.”
“How?”
“Easy, vampires do not cast a reflection in a mirror and crosses they cannot stand. We are in luck that she was only bitten two days ago so we have another four days to find her sire and kill him before she becomes a full fledge killing machine. Her heart rate will keep getting slower and slower and her body temperature will drop until she dies on the seventh day and then she will awaken as a vampire and damned for all eternity unless we find her sire. She will be able to lead us to him and we must prevent her from taking a human life or turning someone else or we will have no choice.” Jamal stopped at that point since saying what they would have to do was too much for him since Mary’s innocent ways had made a major impact on him. After arguing for a few hours Mary showed up and Jamal immediate grabbed a mirror for Rick to see that Mary had no reflection. As might be imagined this greatly disturbed Rick.
“So how do we find that thing that attacked her?” replied Rick with deep concern and still a bit skeptical.
“He will be drawn to her since he can see and hear everything she that she can. That’s why I believe that thing killed Professor Hastings and one more thing vampires can go out in the sun,” replied Jamal a bit worried since he knew Mary might be able to hear what they were saying.
After this point both men wore crucifixes and carried a small compact mirror and their cell phones just in case. They went throughout the town talking to everyone and seeing their reaction to the crucifixes and using their cell phones or mirrors checked to see who did or did not have a reflection. Eventually the police got wind of Jamal and Rick asking questions so they were brought to Officer Greg Blighter who was a veteran on the force. “Now why are you boys stirring up so much trouble?” “No reason but we just want to know who attacked my girlfriend because I am afraid they might come back,” replied Rick nervously. “You boys don’t worry, there hasn’t been anyone missing for a couple of days so the person is probably long gone,” Greg said trying to reassure the two.
“As they were leaving they ran into Tom Bainer who was coming back from more investigating more missing pets. “Man, oh man, animals are coming up missing and drained of their blood like crazy around here,” replied Tom then he saw the two men and then noticed their crucifixes. He immediately turned away and almost spit out his gum. He then turned back and looking at them replied, “Hi, boys having fun.” “No, not really,” replied both Rick and Jamal as they left.
“Did you notice how he reacted to our crosses, Jamal?”
“Yes I did so I am going to go back in there to check his reflection.” Jamal went into the police station and came back a few minutes later saying, “it’s him and he knows we know.” After getting his breath Jamal continued, “I took this Taser since he can use Mary to come after us so I am going to taser her and we will have to tie her up.”
“I hate all this but we have no choice but he is a cop. They always back each other up no matter what,” replied Rick shaking.
Later that night after they tied up Mary they heard a knock at the door and it was Officer Tom Bainer with the most wicked smile who could think of. “Don’t worry you do not have to invite me in again since you already did a few nights ago. You boys think you can do anything to me? Remember we cops have gotten away with beating a handcuff man to death; we have gotten away with arresting a five year old for throwing a temper tantrum and another kid or burping in class. We can do what we want and being a cop is the best profession for a vampire. Yes, I know you know since Mary and I are in communication. I am going to have her tell everyone that it was you two that attacked her and killed Professor Hastings. Jamal you are right that we can go out in the sun but unfortunately we are weaker in the daylight but at night I am stronger than any man but before I set you two up I will go up stairs to talk to Mary my new bride. I fell in love with her when I first met her and I had to make her mine,” Tom said all the while laughing and teasing the guys and spitting out his gum exposing his sharp razor teeth. Rick and Jamal followed close behind and they had a plan of their own. When Tom got up stair he found that crosses were nailed to Mary’s room and holy water was all over the floor and dripping from the ceiling. He turned around in disgust since he could not bear the holy water or the crosses and Jamal threw a vial of holy water into his face and Rick put a cross on his forehead. Tom screamed in agony and fell down the stairs. As he got up Jamal jammed a steak through his heat and Rick cut off his head. Tom then just gave them an evil stare as he turned to dust.
Rick and Jamal ran upstairs to check on Mary and found her feeling much better. She went to the doctor the next day and the doctor reported her heartbeat was normal and so was her blood temperature. Tom never told anyone that he was going to visit Rick and Jamal so the police assumed he ran off. Their suspensions grew when they entered his home and found bodies of animals and humans everywhere as well as the fact he had no mirrors. They assumed he was some psycho and never realized he never stepped in front of a mirror at work.
Mary and Rick both became doctors and Jamal became a police officer helping people and he was not afraid to stand up to the bad cops that gave his profession a bad name.
