Culture Shock
When I was 10 years old my mother met a man who was a soldier in the Black Watch Army. He was on leave at the time spending time with his family. He and my mother met on a night out and after a few weeks of dating he asked her to marry him the reason being was because he was being sent to Hong Kong and he wanted us to go with him. My mum to my astonishment agreed, I was not ready to be uprooted to another house never mind country. Two weeks after the wedding we were standing at the train station with my grandparents saying our goodbyes and waiting for the train that would take us to the airport.

Socially Isolated
This is something that I have wanted to write for a long time now. I suppose it is something that even once this article is concluded I will still want to write about. A part of me wants to preface everything to come with some sort of warning or preemptive apology, but in all honesty I can't come up with one that feels sufficient. Let's just say that I love where I live now and the people that I am surrounded by, and that none of this is indicative of any shortcomings on their part.

Genesis
Suffice it to say that, while enduring the woes of the ‘have nots’ during the 90s in Kalamazoo, MI, the idea of beauty and perfection wasn’t exactly at the forefront of my cerebral cortex. Put plainly, I was your traditionally featured tomboy like Vada Sultenfuss in the 1991 classic, My Girl. I rocked bushy brows, baggy clothes, a ponytail, and some severely scarred extremities. I was flat chested and a mess. I literally cringe with anxiety when I come across throwback photos from that decade.

How to build a paper boat
"There's no way in Hell" The Old Salt had spoken. He'd seen all types of ships in his time and he was adamant that what we set out to do was impossible. "There's no way you can make a seaworthy boat out of paper". He should know. After all, he was a seasoned shipwright who'd lost digits on boatyards from Borneo to Bangor and mastered the craft of boat-building over a lifetime. Who were we? A bunch of amateurs. An arts collective by the Name of Mare Liberum. A motley crew of seven artists, poets, and designers who had gathered at the Antique Boat Museum, in Northern New York State, right on the edge of the Saint Lawrence. We were far from Brooklyn, and it showed.

Pest or mythical being?
There is nothing like flora and fauna to give you a sense of place. I grew up in a tropical region where the animals that surrounded me regularly were lizards, macaws, monkeys, snakes, in addition to your domestic cats, dogs, chickens. That meant that North American critters were exotic to me and experienced through cartoons. If it were available, I would have paid an admission fee to see squirrels, racoons, skunks, and possums-a thought that would be ludicrous to your average American gardener and/or hater of pests. Today I pay hundreds of dollars to have racoons, skunks and possums removed from my backyard.

Different View of Small Town Living
Living in a small town has its perks, and also has its drags... I've lived in the same small town for 30 years. Well, my whole life. I've seen so many people come and go. Businesses start with hopes of bringing something to the community, followed by discouragement with having to close the doors due to, just not having the business. WalMart has tried bringing a store here, but it creates too much competition and smaller stores will just close down. Or so the town says. But honestly, we wouldn't know. I've watched this little town just die down, with no hopes of having something to come in and replace it. Things that make it hard to get resources and essentials that are needed. Even going to the doctor's office is a big deal. You better be prepared for an all day trip. And that's not just waiting in the waiting area, or now a days, your car, for the doctor to call you back. Most people travel at least 90 miles to get what's needed. But then again, if someone is going out of town, we can just let that person know we need something and hopefully they wont be too busy to do you the favor of bringing toilet paper from Walmart because our dollar stores are out, or whatever.

John's Butcher Shop, selling friendship
When I first came to Ireland, a friend told me that the town's butcher's store was a "psychotherapy center" for the entire town. No matter what the trouble, into the butcher store must come out with a smile. I did not understand before, but later became a regular customer of the butcher store, only to find out the reason.
