Puerto Rico is a Place of Beauty Best Experienced Outside of a Pandemic!
My wife and I first experienced the craziness of COVID in March of 2020. We had long planned a Puerto Rico trip to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. As the dates rolled closer, it was becoming more and more apparent COVID could affect our plans. After much consternation, we both opted to proceed ahead with the thought, "what could go wrong."

Tragedy in Bratislava (pt.1) - Letters From Slovakia
There is no tragedy in Bratislava—I read an article last week that said that, to get more reads, I need the title to be a good hook. Let’s be honest. Letters From Slovakia sounds a little too artsy to appeal to a reader casually scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. So, alas, you have been fooled! (Apologies to the crowd that wanted to see a tragedy. If you’re still hankering for one, check out my love life. Ayo.) Speaking of artsy, however, I would love to take a quick turn in the style of Letters From Slovakia. That is, instead of the bloggish style of the series so far, I would love to try to frame it in a more literary, achronological lens. So, consider this installment to be a test run of Steven being weird and artsy.

Of No Permanent Address
It's exciting to be joining the fray on a new platform of writers, such as this one. I only got introduced to the idea of being remunerated for writing in the last few months. Don't get me wrong, I used to write, a lot, in my previous job but it was technical writing in fairly stale engineering reports; not exactly the stuff of my dreams. The picture above is of my work notebook and my laptop in a lovely Airbnb, where I spent about half of my exile from the Schengen area and yes that's a butternut squash in the background, complete with a plastic bag.

THE 2.0 TOURIST AND THE SUPER TRAVELLER
The digital revolution and the spread of new technologies have made travel increasingly simple and accessible, making it unthinkable to separate digital from tourism. The Internet is an integral part of our lives and especially when we travel we can no longer do without looking for information on a search engine or review aggregators to compare various offers. The 21st-century traveler is always connected before, during and after the experience, which is why the challenge for the tourism sector lies in digital.

I just moved to America from Australia (during Covid)
I’ve travelled internationally before, but not like this. Since the start of the Covid experience, Australian citizens have technically not been allowed to leave the country unless they fall into a specific category like being an important government official, an athlete, a celebrity or if they can prove they’ll be out of the country for three months or more. I fell into the three month pleb category. The “exemption” process itself was pretty straightforward for me as I sent through a copy of my permanent American visa as evidence. If I wasn’t going for three months or more I doubt I would have got an exemption but it’s almost certain I would have had difficulty getting back.
