Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acidity occurs when food moves back from the stomach to the food pipe (esophagus) which causes symptoms like a burning chest discomfort called heartburn. Acid reflux can also cause a feeling of nausea, nervousness, and vomiting. To calm acidity and burning sensations, you should eat and drink things that help in improving digestion. If you are suffering from acid reflux symptoms two or more times a week, you must not eat anything without thinking because it can increase your problem.

To diagnose acid reflux symptoms you need to make some by making lifestyle changes. You can try some home remedies to get relief from acidity. Following are some drinks that experts also recommend and which can give you immediate relief from acidity.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux Cough

The most common symptoms of GERD is persistent coughing and heartburn ( burning sensation in middle chest and throat). A persistent cough is a very common symptom of acid reflux. However, people having a persistent cough due to acid reflux don't usually display the symptoms of heartburn at all. There might be several other reasons for a chronic cough. But, cough is one of the most common symptoms of acid reflux and there are some clues to confirm that if it's due to acid reflux and they are as follows:

The incidence of coughing will be mostly at night or after meals

When the person suffers from a cough don't have asthma or post nasal drip.

Chest x-ray shows normal results.

When coughing occurs or aggravates while lying down.

When the patient is not taking ACE inhibitors like Lisinopril or enalapril and still experiencing persistent cough.

If the person is a non-smoker.

When the symptoms of a cough go away with the administration of PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors). PPI is the medicines used to manage acid reflux as a first-line drug. They are available as OTC (Over the counter) medications in the chemist shop. These drugs act by blocking the receptors in the stomach responsible to produce acid.

Cold Milk

Drinking a glass of low-fat cold milk gives instant relief from acid reflux. It shows the best effect in case of heartburn or irritation in the esophagus.

Coconut Water

Coconut water is full of natural vitamins and minerals and it is very effective in relieving stomach pain, acidity, burning sensation, nausea, and stomach disorders.

Smoothies

Green Vegetable smoothies are very soothing when you have stomach problems. They are super healthy and can provide instant relief from acidity and inflammation.

Fennel Water

Fennel water improves digestion, soothes inflammation, and reduces acid reflux. Fennel is served in many restaurants after meals because it helps in improving digestion. Similarly, if you are having acidity, you can drink lukewarm fennel water to give instant relief to the stomach.

Lemon and Honey

Lemon is acidic and it is said that citrus fruits can increase acidity, but drinking a few drops of lemon mixed with honey with lukewarm water is a natural drink that provides instant energy and it detoxes the body. It removes the burning sensation of the stomach, relieves constipation, and promotes digestion.

Vegetable Juice

Drinking a juice of bottle gourd, mint, and lemon help in easy digestion and prevents constipation. This juice is a great detox to cleanse your body.

Drinks to Avoid in Acid Reflux

Some drinks can trigger acidity symptoms and need to be avoided. Avoid or limit the intake of alcohol, sodas or teas, fruit juices, caffeinated beverages, and carbonated beverages. Using some essential oils for acid reflux, and treating heartburn may give natural relief from that blazing sensation.
