Sleep Deprivation

How Sleep Deprivation Can Mess up Your Life

By Iria Vasquez-PaezPublished 8 years ago 3 min read

Sleep deprivation causes many health problems. Your cognition is impaired along with your ability to make money. Mental illness symptoms include not getting enough sleep. Depression, in contrast, can make you sleep too much. Not getting enough sleep leaves a person groggy and messed up. Not getting enough sleep can cause weight gain or weight loss. Consequently, getting less sleep can mean you gain weight as well. Gaining weight happens from lacking sufficient rest since your ability to make good decisions is affected by not getting enough sleep. Concentration is impaired when you do not sleep as much as you need to sleep.

I have spent the large part of my adult life getting more sleep than I ever got as a child without medication for my pediatric schizophrenia. Sleeping is a necessary activity. Not enough sleep made me moody since I’m on the bipolar spectrum as well. Not getting enough sleep can trigger mania for some people. This is why getting enough sleep is something medications can open the door for. Getting enough sleep is essential. The bottom line is that the human race gets more productive if everybody sleeps however long they need to sleep. This is why we invented beds long after pre-history.

Feeling sleepy during the day can increase your accidents that happen along with causing many situations that could lead to injury as well. You also risk high blood pressure when you sleep less than five hours a night, which means that during the day, your blood pressure is higher, I believe I get this but it could also be a medication side effect. Being sleepy during the day also causes interference with insulin use, which can cause diabetes when the body produces less insulin. From the age of eight, I was already getting sleep deprived, and I was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at the age of ten.

Not getting enough sleep in my twenties definitely lowered my sex drive. Since I have been living by myself, I know what it’s like to get enough sleep by now even with my waking up in the middle of the night. Not enough sleep can also affect balance, so I have to wonder how I survived my sleep deprivation in high school doing sports in P.E. and in martial arts class. I could have injured myself from how sleepy I was all the time, without getting a break.

Sleep deprivation does affect performance a lot so had I been on medication, my mental illness would have been easier to deal with. People in modern times drive themselves too much. They pressure themselves to deal with their sleep deprivation by drinking coffee so that they can push themselves harder, all while not realizing they are doing more harm than good. Travelers who do not get enough sleep make themselves more susceptible to illnesses. Getting enough sleep is rare when you are not on meds and victimized by your moods. I have finally been able to get enough sleep for the first time in my adult life even with waking up early or not being able to sleep in as much as I’d like, which I only manage when I’m not 100 percent. I know about melatonin possibly improving this situation. Sleep deprivation in people over 40 causes weight gain as well. Getting enough sleep helps you pay more detailed attention to what you have to get done in any situation whether at work or using your creativity. Sleep can give you insights and dreams into any problem you have with using your creativity. I’m just grateful that in my adult life, I more or less get enough sleep.
