The Mysterious Boy

Hani was enjoying a quiet afternoon at home

By Sudais ZakwanPublished about 5 hours ago 3 min read

Hani was enjoying a quiet afternoon at home when she noticed a butterfly resting on a flower in the small garden in front of her house. Its wings shimmered in the sunlight, and for a moment, she felt drawn to it. She peeked inside the house and saw her mother deeply engaged in a conversation with her aunt over the phone. Seizing the opportunity, Hani decided to try to catch the delicate butterfly. She darted across the garden, her small hands outstretched, trying to follow the butterfly as it flitted between flowers.

In her excitement, she ran further than she realized, chasing the butterfly until she suddenly found herself in the heart of a forest. Tall, dense trees surrounded her, and the forest floor was shadowed in a gloomy haze. Hani’s tiny heart began to beat faster, and fear took hold. She stumbled slightly and then found a large rock where she sat down, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks. She felt utterly lost, trapped in a place unfamiliar and intimidating.

Suddenly, a calm voice cut through the silence. “What’s wrong, little girl? Why are you crying?” Hani jumped at the sound and turned around. There, standing a few steps away, was a boy her own age, looking at her with questioning eyes. His presence was unexpected, yet somehow comforting. Hani’s tears intensified, streaming faster as she tried to speak but found no words.

“You look like you’ve lost your way home,” the boy said gently. Hani nodded shyly, her small body trembling.

“Come with me. Maybe I can help you,” he offered, taking a few steps closer. His calm demeanor reassured Hani, and she felt a glimmer of hope amidst her fear.

As they began to walk, the boy added, “Good children rarely wander this far without their elders. You’re very brave to be here alone.” Hani couldn’t help but wonder silently about him. If he’s just a child like me, then why is he wandering in this forest alone? she thought. There was a sense of mystery about him, a quiet confidence and wisdom that seemed beyond his years.

They moved slowly, carefully navigating the shadows and uneven terrain of the forest. Hani tried to take in the surroundings—the shafts of light falling through the thick canopy, the rustling of unseen creatures, and the smell of damp earth and leaves. Each step with the boy felt like a small comfort in the otherwise intimidating wilderness. He occasionally glanced at her, ensuring she was keeping up and feeling safe.

Finally, a voice rang out, breaking Hani from her swirling thoughts: “Look! There’s your home!” Hani’s eyes widened with relief and joy. Across the road, she could see the familiar door of her house. The butterfly that had led her here was nowhere in sight, but her heart soared with gratitude and relief. She wanted to thank the boy for helping her, for guiding her back to safety without a word of complaint or any demand in return.

Before she could utter a single word of thanks, Hani turned to look at him once more—and found that he was gone. There was no sign of him anywhere, not a trace along the path they had walked. The forest was silent again, as if he had never been there. The experience left Hani bewildered and amazed. The boy had appeared from nowhere, guided her safely out of the forest, and vanished without a trace.

Hani stood there for a few moments, absorbing what had just happened. She felt a mix of wonder, relief, and curiosity. Who was he? Why did he help me? she thought. Despite her unanswered questions, she knew one thing for certain—his kindness and guidance had saved her. As she stepped through her front gate and back into the familiar warmth of her home, she carried the memory of the mysterious boy with her, a story that would remain etched in her heart forever.
