How to Hold Heartbreak at Midnight

(or, Painting Stars Under a Starless Umbrella)

How to Hold Heartbreak at Midnight

When love tilts you past your zenith

facing the dark side,

take a stroll beyond the manicured wall

where the sky is darkest.

Leave aimless tracks,

purposely planted for finding balance.

Choose midnight, when the sky is deep

and things become more clear,

when everything light

pops into place.

Let your mind orbit itself,

turning inside and out—

as many thoughts as the stars

twinkle.

Watch your heart wrinkle

as silver sparkles sprinkle,

shrinking into the distance.

Become just a pilgrim of time and gravity,

turning your cheek

meek,

accepting what turns under an umbrella

of painted lights.

Melt into the starless night.

Be wary—your mind will become a vice,

wanting to fool

the heart twice.

Don't turn from the midnight mirror,

from the light it holds in darkness.

Remember this truth:

love dissolved

and everything turns dark

in time.

But where there is darkness

there is always light

to make it so.

In the morning, when things are not as clear

and the coffee is dark roasted,

practice this:

picture painted stars

under a starless umbrella.
