Songs That Stick Like Glitter, A Pride Playlist
June 2021 marks the the 51st anniversary of the first ever pride-march. For those of us who are still in lockdown, pride celebrations might look a little more like Netflix in bed with a jumbo bag of Doritos, but that doesn't mean you have to completely surrender all your pride-celebration staples.

Thank You for Your Support
I remember being a very naive 18 year old, fresh out of private Christian school and thrust into this thing called life. I did not know who I was or what I was doing, as I am sure most at that age feel. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was working as a technical support representative for AOL at the time. I received an IM from a coworker I had never talked to asking if I had a swinging partner. This green kid knew that swing dancing was quite popular at the time, but did not have any idea that you needed a specific partner for it. I had no idea. But, I was certainly going to find out. I came to find out that swing dancing was not actually what was meant by that question. But an instant connection occurred and I met the person that would introduce me to a whole world I had no idea existed. We became instant friends and began going to the clubs just about every night. I was having such an enriching experience, but I was also falling hopelessly in love with this man. I was doing this even though I knew he had a girlfriend in Orlando. Eventually the night came when I was to meet this girlfriend. It was that night at Masquerade that I met his girlfriend, Eddie. Once again my whole perspective on everything changed. I was introduced to this world of unconditional acceptance that I had never experienced. It was fun and exciting and tumultuous. I loved every second of it.

Katy's Pride Playlist
From Bronski Beat to Lil Nas X, my playlist expresses a story which can be viewed as a narrative love story or an allegory for how our community has struggled towards freedom over the past century or so. Each song in my playlist is represented by a line in a poem, telling a story of queer love and self-acceptance. The protagonist comes from a difficult situation and through connecting with community is able to develop self-confidence, pride and love. Lines from my playlist songs go together to tell a story of adversity, courage, victory and love. The protagonist in the story goes through three main phases; Isolation, Community and Love.

We're All Just Pink
Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts It’s 2010, and Kristen Stewart is starring in The Runaways, a biopic about the eponymous all-female rock band from the late seventies. You’re a preteen, the Twilight franchise has awakened the rabid fangirl within you, and you’ve been following Stewart’s career because she’s got such a cool, mysterious vibe, I just think she’s really interesting. You research the band behind the film and discover Joan Jett, the real-life rock star inspiring Stewart’s on-screen role.

I Grew Up Without a Mirror. Top Story - June 2021.
The first time I saw a queer person on TV, he was a gay man in a soap opera. I knew he was gay because that was everything he was. He was an obnoxiously loud hairdresser who constantly flirted with the straight, macho men around him, demonstrating a severe lack of boundaries and making everyone uncomfortable. This man, whose every quality made him more a woman than a man, had limp wrists, a persistent lisp, and constantly put his hands on his hips. His purpose was clear: he was here to be ridiculed.

Your 30 Minute Rainbow Pride Playlist
Woohoo, Pride Month! Time for parties, parades, and embracing your sexuality and gender identity, whatever they may be. I've always enjoyed Pride music. Unlike other music played for holidays - like Christmas or Halloween - music blasted during Pride doesn't need to be specific. So long as it's about embracing your individuality, loving who you want to love, or even about celebration in general, it works for the month. Just like sexuality and gender, Pride music is fluid. And it's always super fun!

Songs From My Queer Life That Speak To Me
Dancing Queen - ABBA "Dancing queen, only seventeen" ABBA is a key band to include on any LGBT playlist. While their lyrics may not exactly describe queer experiences, they have always been icons. This is partly contributed to their out of the box, 'campy' style. The use of the term "Queen" in the song can also easily be interpreted as the queer term originally used to refer to a flamboyant, effeminate gay man.

My Big Gay Country Playlist
Country music has never been known as a culturally progressive genre. This is why it serves as such an important touchstone to measure social change. If country music is becoming more inclusive, that means there is hope for the rainbow flag even in the deepest set, most traditional parts of our nation.
