Alcohol Addiction: Mental Disease or Choice?
As I reach for my third water bottle within the hour to cure my killer hangover, I think back to the vague events of the night before. I scroll through my camera roll at the numerous pictures taken to help my memory. Cheeks pressing together with big smiles pass by, live photos capture stumbling dancers. The next photo is one of me by myself, and from the first glance at my eyes, low and red, I get an intrusive thought, one that has haunted me for years: Am I becoming my father’s daughter? After a decade of watching his internal battle with alcohol addiction, I have suppressed numerous lingering questions that have perplexed my subconscious. The one that stumps me the most, may be the most significant one to find an answer to: Is alcohol addiction a choice or a disease?

Wine In Your Cocktails
Wine as a cocktail ingredient can often be difficult to use for a number of reasons. It’s challenging to find a delicate balance between the distinctive aromas and tannins of wine amongst other flavours. Sometimes wine can dry a drink out and dull the palate. I have struggled personally with trying to find new and exciting flavours that work in harmony with wine without the creation tasting like a twist on sangria. However there is an upside. With 67 wine producing countries in the world there is a boundless list of possibilities and flavour profiles to work with. Even the body and texture of wine can be used to create something special. It just takes a little patience, experimentation and understanding of flavour.

I was never a big drinker before college. My parents occasionally let me try their beer or a shot if we were at one of their friend's houses, but I never got drunk. I wasn't friends with the party crowd in high school, and my friends and I were much happier going to IHOP or playing board games than trying to get wasted.
