Where did the children go?
November 2019 The ride back from seeing Racheal was anything but boring. I kept thinking about whether I should go to the STAR group the next day, and I must have thought of a thousand excuses not to. I was worried about crowds and didn’t want to make another trip into the city. But honestly, none of those excuses were solid enough to skip it, especially since I had already told Racheal I would be there.

When He took it away from me
I pushed so many people away from fear of rejection, and no patience. My ex-husband has no patience when was in college before taking a semester or two off he would threaten me that he would leave me. This feeling was so damaging to be I wasn't sure of what to think or say. I felt like Shane took away my ability to trust, and to love.

Kind of Cruel
At first I thought that we were just kind of cruel. We were teenagers who thought we didn’t matter. It was almost like we knew each other in another life. We just understood each other without speaking. We both loved each other very much but we weren’t good for each other. Sadly only one of us made it out of that shitty town. I can’t blame him for his actions, if I were in his shoes I honestly would have done the same thing. We both lost very important people in our lives, I think that we still have more people to lose. I just didn’t know he was going to be one of them. Whenever I think about it for too long I get the same amount of anger I felt when I watched him die. All we wanted to do was make our hometown proud and it doesn’t feel like any of us did. It got all too much for him and I wish I could’ve seen it at the time. When the worst was happening to both of us we were always there for eachother. I didn’t know how to be a person without him. We swore that one day we would be running that city. Now I can’t go anywhere in that city without feeling sick.

Time has flown by since I opened up to Racheal about everything. You know, the incest and the mental and physical abuse from my half-brother, Ronnie. It's been 23 months now. Right now, I'm out of work because my company shut down its Baton Rouge offices, and honestly, I'm just really worn out. Plus, I still deal with a lot of pain from that car accident back in 2009 when a drunk teenager hit me on my way to work. I did sue her and got $120,000, but of course, my lawyer, who was a total crook, took more than half of it.

1975 April I wasn't exactly the brightest crayon in the box, if you catch my drift. I had spent the last three years in private school, where my main focus seemed to be learning how to kiss girls. Seriously! My first kiss happened in 7th grade! The schoolwork was pretty dull and felt like a repeat of what I learned back in 5th grade, even though I was supposed to be in 8th. But hey, I did enjoy reading. "The Giving Tree" was one of my top two favorites, and "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens was my all-time favorite. I connected with it since I was officially an orphan, having lost both my parents. Now, here I was in Plantersville, Texas, also known as the middle of nowhere, and while 9th grade was somewhat fun, I wasn't really shining academically anymore. Things were tough at home, which made school even harder. Thankfully, I had a really awesome teacher, Mrs. Lampe, who treated me like I mattered. I also had a cool friend, Jeanette Ripkowski, and we hung out between classes. It felt good to know I had at least two people who cared about me.

Where did the children go?
Part I: 2017 We gathered in a circle, sharing story after story. I was definitely not keen on going first, so I just listened in. No one was forced to speak, and it seemed like the regulars were the ones doing most of the talking. I couldn’t help but wonder how they felt so at ease. This was my first time here, and honestly, I’m not much of a talker anyway, but I really admired the bravery it took for them to share their experiences.
