The Flow of Writing

Embrace the Process

By Anthony ScottPublished 12 months ago 1 min read

When I first committed myself to writing, I thought discipline would be the key.

I treated it like a structured job—showing up every day, ready to fill the page. But I quickly learned that writing isn’t just about discipline; it’s about rhythm.

You can’t force creativity to clock in at 8 AM. Some days, the words flow like a river; other days, they trickle or refuse to come at all. That’s the dance of writing—the mystery that makes it both exhilarating and frustrating.

I’ve realized that writing is a conversation. It invites us to play first, to let ideas swirl freely before we refine them. Remember the joy when you first discovered the magic of words? That’s where the real essence of writing begins.

But once the magic settles, the real work starts. Editing. Rewriting. Reshaping. Because no matter how beautiful our words feel to us, they need clarity to resonate with others.

An editor once said, “Kill your darlings.” Not literally, but be ruthless in cutting what doesn’t serve the story. Misspellings, awkward phrasing, cluttered thoughts—these are distractions. And readers notice.

So we edit—not just for them, but for ourselves. For readability. For impact. For respect toward the craft.

Then comes the hardest part: letting go.

Once polished, the story is no longer just yours. You’ve given it wings, and it will find its own place in the world. Maybe it will be celebrated. Maybe it will be ignored. Maybe it will touch one person in a way you never expected.

And that’s the beauty of writing.

The joy is in the creation.

The rest? That’s just part of the journey.

Author's Note:hank you for being part of this process. Keep writing. Keep flowing.
