Our book club choice this month was Molly Guptill Manning’s Books That Went to War: The Stories That Helped Us Win World War II. It weaves a compelling story of how literature was used as a tool to bolster morale, increase literacy, and promote democratic values during one of the world’s darkest hours. The distribution of Armed Services Editions (ASEs) during WWII probably began as an effort to entertain soldiers. It ended up as an organic movement democratizing access to literature and encouraging critical thinkers at a time when authoritarian regimes sought to control information.

There are many tales in this part of the Amalfi Coast. One summer, in the beautiful town of Millefiori, nestled between the azure Tyrrhenian Sea and majestic cliffs, a music festival was in full swing. The town was famous for attracting musicians from all over the world. However, its main claim to fame was the lemon. Tourists were entranced by the enormous size of these yellow anomalies, which stood out due to their large exteriors and surprisingly small interiors.

The Journey of a Challenge
I joined an online five-day bookmaking challenge. I love paper and have several beautiful selections. However, I like to create my own art. For this, I collected all ugly gel print scraps, ripped the nice parts, dug into my recycling bin, got some used teabags, lace, scrap fabric, words from magazines, color copies of experimental doodles, tissue, watercolor, and copier papers. I collaged it at all to 300 GSM watercolor paper. Amidst this chaos, I brought out metallic watercolor paint and left over coffee to drink, splatter, splotch, and spill with intention.

So, I prepared myself with warm clothing, waterproof shoes, and an extra-large umbrella.
