Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 10
On the latest Everyone’s a Critic Movie Podcast myself and co-hosts Bob Zerull and Josh Adams tackled nostalgia. We were discussing this week’s classic, Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark, one of mine and Josh’s favorite movies. Watching Indiana Jones raises so many emotions for me but the main one is nostalgia and nostalgia is kind of funny. When you come to associate something with a time in your life, happy or sad, nostalgia tends to gloss over portions of actual history.

Movie Review: 'Los Angeles Overnight'
Los Angeles Overnight takes a familiar plot and dresses it up with some satisfying weirdness and one terrific lead performance. Arielle Brachfield plays Priscilla, a wannabe actress struggling to stay afloat in Los Angeles. Director Michael Chrisoulakis uses image and dialogue to keep audiences off balance, even as the story has the conventional trappings of a thriller.

Movie Review: 'Love Simon'
Love Simon is remarkable for being not all that accomplished or remarkable. Don’t get me wrong, the film is lovely. It’s just lovely in the same way a middle of the road sitcom has graceful moments fitting of the medium. What’s remarkable is that we’ve finally reached an era where we can present young gay characters in movies without it having to carry the weight of a movement. Gay people deserve to be represented in as much middle of the road, sitcom entertainment as anyone else, and Love, Simon hits those notes perfectly.

Movie Review: 'Tomb Raider'
Tomb Raider is one of those doomed video-game properties, destined to elude filmmakers in the way most video-games elude those who wish to turn them into movies. It’s the nature of the video game to elude anyone’s singular vision as what is a video game but a non-singular vision? Sure, the makers have a particular vision and their choices limit those of the players in many ways.

TV Review: 'Atlanta' Robbin Season Episode 3
Van (Zazie Beets) is back, Earn (Donald Glover) learns that a $100 bill is more trouble than it’s worth, and Paper Boi (Bryan Tyree Henry) hangs with Clark County on an all new Atlanta, episode 3: Money Bag Shawty. Where was Van? This is not a question that the show is all that interested in answering. We know Earn spent the first two episodes of this season homeless despite the fact that Van was getting his mail, including a sizable check.

Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 9
Our classic on the Everyone's a Critic movie podcast this week was His Girl Friday, one of my favorite comedies of all time, and my mom's favorite of all time. Despite horrible rumors spread by other members of my family that claim Pretty Woman was my mother's favorite film, I can tell you, it was His Girl Friday and her all-time crush Cary Grant.

Movie Review: 'Gringo'
Harold (David Oyelowo) hasn’t had things easy in his relatively young life. Despite his pretty wife and his mid-level corporate stooge job, he’s been stepped on every step of the way for being the kind of nice guy chump that people take advantage of. He’s the perfect best friend for Richard (Joel Edgerton), a cocky, sleazy corporate raider in need of a yes man like Harold who’s easily manipulated.

Movie Review: 'Strangers Prey at Night'
Kinsey (Bailee Madison) is being sent to boarding school because she’s grown out of control. Her parents, Cindy (Christina Hendricks) and Mike (Martin Henderson), are at their wit's end with their rebellious offspring, and as we join their story, they, along with their son, Luke (Lewis Pullman) are driving Kinsey to her new school. Tensions are high among the family and reach a boiling point when they pull off for the night.

Movie Review: 'A Wrinkle in Time'
A Wrinkle in Time is a genuine delight. Wonderful characters, genuine laughs, and gorgeous visuals make for one of the best family adventures in a very long time. Director Ava DuVernay has taken the beloved bestselling book by Madeleine L’Engle and crafted a genuine blockbuster that retains the inspiring heart of its beloved source material. DuVernay has also discovered a brand new movie star in young Storm Reid.

TV Review: 'Atlanta' Robbin Season Episode 2
Paper Boi experiences Robbin Season up close and personal while Earn comes into some money in Season 2 Episode 2 of the FX hit series Atlanta. Fresh off of his house arrest, Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) is eager to find some good weed. Unfortunately, his new found fame means that even his long time dealer assumes he has a lot of money and thus we get the theme of this season of Atlanta, Robbin’ Season as Paper Boi is robbed at gunpoint and doesn’t even come away with something to smoke for his trouble.

Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 8
Nearly 50 movies in 2018 for me. That’s actually less than usual for me in a two month period but let’s not dig too deeply into my sad, lonely life in front of a screen of some sort. This is, after all, a modern project intended to catalog a year in my life as a movie critic. It’s also about how singularly silly it is to rank and compare movies. Each film is subjective and to say that one movie is better than another movie is rather ridiculous in most cases.

Movie Review: 'Death Wish'
I went into Eli Roth’s remake of Charles Bronson’s Death Wish expecting to come out angry and ready for a fight. I was expecting to be offended and spend some time writing about the poor timing of a film release that deifies the gun industry just days after the deaths of high school students in Parkland, Florida. I do have some of that righteous indignation built up in my mind but the reality of Death Wish is so boring I can barely stir up the outrage to pan it.
