Yokai Doctor by Yuki Sato
Yokai Doctor is a delightful little manga I found sitting, along with a Marvel collection of X-Men comics from the Sixties, on the free giveaway table at the Marion Public Library. Being the pig that I am, I grabbed them up before any adolescents even got a look at them. I'm the biggest kid there is, after all.

The Outer Limits: "Cold Hands, Warm Heart"
Poor William Shatner! He goes rocketing off to Venus and comes back possessed by the spirit of a space mermaid--a very ugly one to boot. It makes him ice cold, and we know this because he can drink whole boiling cauldrons of coffee, and likes to turn the thermostat up to 90.

The Tingler
The Tingler is a 1959 horror shlock monster send-up produced by exploitation gimmick auteur William Castle, whose stable of low-rent films always featured an added "bonus" for audience members: a free Rasputin beard, "life insurance" for anyone that should happen to die of fright during the viewing of his Psycho kock-off Homicidal (1961), and, in the case of The Tingler, select theater seats wired with joy buzzers or electrodes or some shit, to shock the asses of the American monster movie-going public. (Needless to say, he would have been sued, arrested, possibly deported, or even executed for trying such shenanigans in modern times, particularly if his little stunt resulted in some unsuspecting movie patron having a massive coronary. At the very least, he would have faced a civil suit due to "emotional trauma".

You think Santa Claus is just some mythological lard butt that flies around in a holly jolly sleigh with eight imprisoned reindeer pumping the air furiously, their bleeding Rudolph the Red Nosed (because dripping blood from their hemorrhagic brainpans) noses pressed against the freezing December winds. It's all just folklore, ain't it? All in good fun, ain't it?

Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers
1956 was either a stellar year to be an intergalactic flying saucer menace, or a bad one, depending on your perspective. We have Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Invasion of the Saucer Men, The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers. Whatever heavy trip the space brothers were laying on us that year (and it had more to do than just cleaning up the environment) the message was delivered by an iron fist in a velvety intergalactic space gauntlet. Or some such.

Swamp Thing
I've read a couple of issues of classic Swamp Thing, and own a few. The film Swamp Thing, starring the delectable Adrienne Barbeau as well as Ray 'Leland Palmer" Wise, was directed by the late, great Wes Craven. It co-stars Louis Jourdan, the incomparable and much-lamented late David Hess, as well as Dick Durock as Swamp Thing.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a very bad movie about Martians coming down from Mars to do the honorable thing and kidnap Santa Claus (John Cail), who begins the movie by giving an interview to a pesky reporter from Santa Headquarters in the North Pole, while Mrs. Claus (Doris Rich) orders the overworked, underpaid, overstaffed (and possibly oversexed) elves of the toy factory to start hauling ass because it's Christmas Eve. (Honestly, I made up that last part because I thought it sounded funny).

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, is a film I well remember from childhood. At the Community Rec Center at Fort Clayton in Central America, Panama, area of the Canal Zone, they played it on an old-fashioned projection TV. It's the only other film I can remember seeing there, besides this thing with Abbot and Costello or Laurel and Hardy as pirates. I can't remember which it was.

That was about the good year 1996, and it was a time of incredible promise and pain: Promise that life might be every bit as intense and fun going forward as it was at that one youth-infused moment; pain because the fun usually involved someone jumping on your head, sometimes from the bleeding lip of the dirty, spit and cigarette butt littered stage, sometimes just to be doing it. And, well, if they were bigger than you--bammo!

Merzbow - Material Action 2
A heaping dollop of noisiness from the long-time Japanoise king, Masami Akita, a.k.a. "Merzbow," who has been going since 1978 and has a hundred and forty million albums of this stuff. Here, we have a heavy collage of bang and clang, intercut with high, piercing, synth whistling but it never does in any way get dull. The feeling is that one is inside the bowls of some great, futuristic tin horn beast from a demonic bestiary located somewhere south of Chiba City and somewhere north of the Sprawl. Strings are plucked behind the wall of noise, there is always the sensation of movement...movement...movement forward in sound, a process of progression.
