A Double Feature
The Beguiled is a remake of a 1971 film of the same name starring Clint Eastwood, in turn based on A Painted Devil, a 1966 novel by Thomas P. Cullinan. My dad rented the original film when he read that a remake was in the works. I enjoyed the movie and its 2017 update was on my list of must-watch movies of the summer especially because it had a great cast and I was sold on the idea of blonde haired southern belles in pretty, pastel dresses, tormenting a helpless man. I was originally hoping to do a double feature of The Beguiled with My Cousin Rachel, as they are both atmospheric period pieces dealing with suspicion and sexual tension.

Review: Shimmer Lake
So, I recently watched Shimmer Lake, a Netflix original drama/comedy. When the trailers for the film came out earlier this summer I was immediately intrigued. The film featured a cast of typically comedic actors such as Rainn Wilson, Adam Pally, Ron Livingston and John Mitchell Higgins. I was pretty sure that the film would be more "Fargo" - like, a dark comedy with a quirky bunch of characters. This is not necessarily the end result of Shimmer Lake.

"Show Time, A-Holes" - A Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is not a perfect movie. That doesn’t stop it from being one of Marvel’s best. In fact, I believe it to be overall superior to the first film. This is largely due to the fact that almost nothing feels wasted here. Everyone is given something to do, everyone has an arc (even bit characters), and their payoff affects both them and the plot at large. I think at some point writing the script (or perhaps from the beginning), James Gunn realized that doing a sequel is about more than just throwing a bunch of shit on the screen that people recognize. Sure, Howard the Duck is in it, but I think fans have become accustomed to the level of fan service present in these more recent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that they’re catching on to the fact that dangling a big shiny object in front of our faces and expecting us to jump just doesn’t cut it anymore. I think the fact that Vol. 2 doesn’t try to retread the things in the first movie that made it work, or duplicate the tone or structure of it, which may be disappointing to some people. When people first saw The Empire Strikes Back, a lot of them thought it was considerably darker and more tense than Star Wars was, and it’s depressing cliffhanger left a lot of them dissatisfied. Years later many regard it to be the best film in the saga.

Drifter Jack Dawson won third class tickets for the Titanic in a poker game, and he and his friend Fabrizio catch the ship just as it is leaving. First class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater, her mother and Rose's fiance Cal Hockley also board. Rose is on the way to Philadelphia to marry Hockley, an arrangement made by her mother to protect her status of wealth. Unhappy with this decision, Rose contemplates throwing herself from the high perch of the Titanic's rails.

Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue
DRUGS ARE BAD MMMK! Now I remember a time when every kid's hero in the late 80s and early 90s was telling them not to do drugs. I, from time to time, will watch these and laugh, they are corny for the most part, but because they really don't educate you about why pot is bad. They tell you that pot can ruin your life, you'll lose your family, you won't do good in school etc. But for me personally, pot isn't the worse drug on the planet, not by a long shot. Yet people fear it could lead to other drugs. Though I personally never had the need to do hardcore drugs because I've seen it in my life to know better, people have this fear that pot is the gateway drug. While some studies believe this isn't the case, others have seen this happen. Me, I'll just drink wine (the drink that can cause liver damage, totally legal!)
