Unearthed in Hualongdong, East Asia, in 2019, the remains consist of a jaw, skull, and leg bones, baffling experts at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) who have been unable to classify them within existing lineages. The facial structure of the hominin bears resemblance to modern humans who diverged from Homo erectus around 750,000 years ago. However, its distinctive feature, the absence of a chin, bears more similarity to the Denisovans, an extinct ancient Asian hominin lineage that diverged from Neanderthals over 400,000 years ago. Through collaboration with researchers from Xi'an Jiaotong University in China, the University of York in the UK, and Spain's National Research Center on Human Evolution, the CAS team suggests the discovery of an entirely new lineage – a hybrid between the ancestral line leading to modern humans and the lineage of other ancient hominins in the region, such as Denisovans. This finding addresses the historical challenge of categorizing Pleistocene hominin fossils found in China, which often defy straightforward classification. Instead of being relegated to intermediate stages on the path to modern humans or considered archaic forms of Homo sapiens or Homo erectus, these fossils could represent a new and distinct lineage.
