My Life At a Standing Desk
I recently got a standing desk, and it has changed everything for me. I have found that my productivity is higher, my cognitive capabilities are faster, and my stamina is greater. I have sat for the better portion of my life. As we all have. I am a writer, and quite literally sitting at a desk is my job. Over the years, my hips have gotten looser, and my sciatic nerve tighter. I have tried every different desk chair and at the end of the day, I feel like crying. I also suffer from what I call computer shoulder. It's when my shoulders lock-in at my ears, and I have to slowly find my way to the floor for them to relax. It is awful and I was in hell.

I Had a Stroke
On Sunday, June 23 at 11:04 AM, I walked into the toddler room at my church. At 11:05 AM, I began to feel the effects. My wife was outside of the room on the playground, trying to dry up some of the water on the playground. I reached for the paper towels by the sink in the nursery in order to assist. I immediately felt a little "off." Something wasn't quite right. I made it to the playground and began wiping out the sinks of the playground kitchen, and my hand felt weak and unresponsive. I remember telling my wife, "My hand wasn't working right."

Cromolyn Sodium for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
Cromolyn sodium oral (brand name Gastrocrom, but I’ll just refer to it as “cromolyn” for this article) is used to treat mast cell activation diseases, allergies, and asthma by reducing the release of mast cell mediators. It comes in other forms and can even be purchased as an over-the-counter nasal spray, but I’ll be discussing the oral suspension. It is classified as a mast cell stabilizer, although according to Dr. Theoharides, a pioneer in the study of mast cells and their role in inflammatory illnesses, this is a misclassification, as cromolyn does not inhibit the release of cytokines. Through an unknown mechanism, it inhibits the release of histamine and prostaglandin. People with mast cell activation disease can suffer from a number of symptoms due to being overwhelmed by mast cell mediators like histamine and prostaglandin, and cromolyn can provide relief. For some people, the relief is significant.

Road to Recovery
I worked a full-time job and had three kids. I started to feel worn down more. Just tired and then the headaches came. It took me out of work. There was no participating in activities. Laying in the dark on my bed was all I could do. Face twisted in pain or asleep from three extra-strength Tylenol. It went on like that for months.
