Homegrown Thanksgiving '23
This is the second entry documenting our 14-month challenge to ourselves to prepare a Thanksgiving meal made entirely of food and ingredients grown, harvested, hunted and produced right here on Fain-XX Farm. Regardless of the outcome, subsequent entries, photos, recipes and social media posts will be arranged into a book format for publication.

Accessibility Means Access To Food
I was originally writing this as a Facebook rant. Unfortunately for the world at large, I'm off this week and have way too much time on my hands. I spent the morning in conversation with a visually-impaired book editor. We were discussing what conlangs (constructed languages, i.e. fantasy or made up languages like Klingon and Sindarin) mean for accessibility when a person needs a screen reader. Turns out, it generally isn't an issue if the screen reader can read it and the website or story is formatted correctly (lots of food for thought there, no pun intended). That got me thinking about how the world views people with invisible disabilities, like severe food allergies or autoimmune disorders that are triggered by food.

The Writing Is on the Wall
I am blessed in many ways to be a writer, and right now, I feel especially privileged to be a writer of sci-fi/dystopian fiction. This has given me a level of insight into crisis survival that many people don’t possess. I am also blessed to be able to volunteer at a local organization that serves the ID/DD community (Intellectual Disability/Developmental Disability - I am an autistic person), working to stock and organize our Food Pantry, where clients come to “shop” for supplemental foodstuffs to stretch their food dollars and eat healthy meals. These two parts of my life have given me an edge, which I feel needs to be shared.

Fruity Paradise after a Hot Day at the Pool
After swimming for hours at the Blanding City Pool by the South Chapel, the coins pressed in my hand, the parking lot asphalt scorched my feet as I dashed to the yellow Sno Shack across Main Street. I waited behind a friend, my brother, my cousin, or other eager preteens, the goathead thorns digging into the heels and balls of our feet. But the pain was worth the upcoming brain freeze to counteract the dry heat.

Summer sweet
Take a deep breath in. Now let it out. Summer is here. Swimming pools, bonfires, outdoor sports, beach trips? Yes please-- sign me up. The sun and the temperatures may be high but so are our spirits. Burgeoning bug populations can't bring us down either; this is the season of fireworks and fourth-of-July parties, and I'm here for it. I still remember playing wiffleball at my cousin's house every 4th, almost like a cut plotline from the Sandlot. I also remember how much I hated wiffleball as a kid, and it's funny how much I'd like to take another crack at it now. Luckily for an unathletic child there was a lot more to do at family parties than swing that tiny yellow bat and hope against hope for a homer to an imaginary crowd of adoring fans.
