Nostalgia is a Three-Bean Salad
“That’s crazy!” I said, wrestling our dull can opener into a can of green beans. I stood next to my mother at the long laminate countertop that peeled up at the edges, a green plastic bowl between us. She stared down as she carefully diced an onion, not meeting my gaze. I had just finished telling her we would never fight, a reassurance following her argument with my little brother, but she had responded that we would. Maybe not until I was older, she said, but she could promise we would. At nine years old, I was aghast.

A perfect cup of frozen yogurt
I may only be thirty-one going on thirty-two as I write this but I like to think that I have some stories that are worth telling. Some experiences we have in life can be retold to educate, inspire or even warn others. However some stories are just fun to tell and may put a smile on the face of the person hearing it. The story that I’m about to tell is one of those stories that I hope will put a smile on the face of the person reading it. The star of the story is my favorite summer food and that would be frozen yogurt of course. Our story takes place in the summer of 2019. Summer is my favorite time of year and frozen yogurt is one of my favorite foods so in other words this story is full of things that I consider to be my favorite things. So sit back and relax as you think happy thoughts. It all began when I was doing one of my normal daily activities scrolling through Instagram. I probably saw more than one hundred posts that day but I can honestly say that I only remember one post from my scrolling that sunny summer day. It was a post advertising a contest from Yogurt Land also known as my favorite frozen yogurt shop. I love going to yogurt land and creating fun and tasty frozen yogurt creations. For the contest you had to go to Yogurt Land create a cup of frozen yogurt and let you imagination run wild. Then all you had to do was upload the photo to Instagram using the hashtags provided. I consider myself to be a very creative person and I have been known to create some pretty good looking cups of frozen yogurt. One day after work I went to Yogurt Land and created what I called a Yogurt land mountain. I decorated my mountain with Chocolate, fruit, sprinkles, candy, and more. I still love looking at the pictures of my creation. After my fun and tasty trip to Yogurt Land I simply uploaded the picture to Instagram and followed the directions on how to enter. Well, it turned out that particular cup of beautifully decorated frozen yogurt was not just a perfect summer treat that looked good in pictures and helped you stay cool on hot days. That beautiful cup of frozen yogurt ended up winning me a hundred dollar gift card to yogurt land! I was very happy and kind of surprised. I ended up treating a good amount of people to frozen yogurt after that. This story is one of my favorite and sweetest summer memories. The best part is that one cup of frozen yogurt turned in to many more delicious and beautifully decorated works of art. Thank you for reading this happy story about my favorite summer food. I hope you have a great summer that is filled with many very beautiful and very tasty cups of amazingly decorated frozen yogurt. Here are reasons why frozen yogurt is one hundred percent the very best summer food ever made.

Summer Marshmallows
The marshmallows were on sale when she went to the market today. She decided to buy a bag. She had such good memories of smores, as a child at summer camp and school camping trips. She thought of the melted Hersey bar creations. Trying to keep the melted mess from falling off the graham crackers, She remembered her mother laughing as she licked the gunk off her fingers. In fact, everybody had been laughing. Her mother would make up stories. She often created them by using the names of her students. The children were thrilled by the tales.

Food, Man, Food…. Top Story - June 2022.
I am not one of those people who has a million skills. Most days I feel like a barely functioning adult who will take every gold star I can get, so long as I earned them honestly. That out of the way, I know food. I considered going into the service industry for a living and decided not to because I realized it would make me hate doing something I enjoy, which would have drastically skewed my outlook on summers and what they bring. Fresh sliced watermelon that was picked at just the right time, so it’s juicy and sweet. Cold cocktails with friends in the hot dry evenings of the Southwest. Ice cream with my kids after a long day of working in the sun. All of that is so intertwined with Summer in my memories that I can almost smell them on the long days waiting for the sun to set in the western horizon, starting somewhere around the middle of May, when New Mexico starts to really warm up.

I First Tried Watermelon at 30...
I first tried watermelon at 30. A 30 year old Black woman that never tried the fruit probably sounds unheard of... but there I was trying it. And for what reason- you ask? Because I knew I didnt like it ofcourse. I didnt like the looks I'd saw it get or the snickers from other classmates growing up in all mostly "Privileged" schools. That was back when keeping up a "token" image was silently expected of me. But now- this summer- I was bartending at a nice new italian pizza bar (yes pizza & bar) in a more socially aware world than the one I had grew up in. In this world, it's ok to identify as anything you want to and express anything you feel. The only similarity was that I was still the only Black woman on staff in a tourist packed restaurant- and here I was on my first day ... being asked to make a watermelon margarita. It was a hot day and people could pass by the bar window on my level to grab a drink- so I must have reluctantly made 30 watermelon-ritas before my break. And all I could think of on that break was those damn smiling faces drinking it so boldly on the street. BECAUSE DONT THEY KNOW?! DIDNT they see those same vile pictures and those same looks I'd seen? Didnt they know the words of hate for people like me that those pictures represented? Were some of them laughing at me after while they walked away drinking them? A part of me was fuming that i even had to make it at all. And then... I heard something in me say

Watermelon Rind Pickles, Mango Jam, and Banana Nut Bread - Summer In My Heart
Summer's at my grandparents' home still fill my head with some of the most wonderful memories of mychildhood. My parents moved to South Jersey from Orlando, FL - my birthplace - in the fall of 1981. Every summer when school let out, my younger brother and I were flown to Jupiter, FL to spend a wonderful three months with my grandparents.

My Favourite Summer Food
Summer Time is a hot season and eating is something I do little of The thought of turning on the stove or oven does not appeal to me and not being much of cook as it is in any season making a greek salad doesn't involve cooking there is nothing nicer than a greek salad you have thrown together yourself and a nice cool drink and no not talking about an alcoholic drink I am talking about a nice glass of coke or pepsi with ice.

Hellbent for Berries. Runner-Up in Summer Camp Challenge.
The only bad thing about raspberries is remembering how to spell it. Everything else about the berry is perfect. I first encountered them in my father’s garden. He loved when his children would join him there. Delving into the raspberry bushes involved standing out in the hot sun and bravely facing the dangers of buzzing bees and prickly branches.

Mango Mania: Tales of Summer Nostalgia. Top Story - June 2022.
Since moving to England two months ago, I've not really had a 'food problem.' Rice, a staple in the Philippines, is readily available here - I was, in fact, pleasantly surprised to see an aisle label for it in Tesco. There are Asian stores for condiments, and for the rest, well, I'm not particularly endeared to most of them. As blasphemous as it might sound to other Filipinos, I'm not really a fan of binignit, sinigang or lechon.

When We All Get Together
Last year was the first year in, well, as many years as I can remember that there was no conversation about where we would be for Thanksgiving. We were going to be in our home, thank you, just the two of us, keeping all germs real/imagined/feared to ourselves.
