Book Review: "A Book Forged in Hell" by Steven Nadler
I have to admit that even when I was studying my modules of Western Philosophy whilst doing my Master's Degree, Spinoza was not my strong suit nor did he interest me very much. I knew a bit about his philosophy and his rationalisations and I had read parts of the book that The Book Forged in Hell speaks of. But I think the one thing that this book did is reignite a want to know more about philosophies I perhaps need to learn more about. I may not have had that much of an interest before, but this book has definitely created somewhat of a curiosity in me. Yes, before you ask - I read it on my phone...

No One Mourns The Wicked Reveals Glinda's Sad Fate
"And goodness knows the wicked's lives are lonely. Goodness knows the wicked die alone. It just shows when you're wicked, you're left only on your own," Glinda sings during the first song in the musical Wicked. To those gathered, and even to the audience, she seems to be singing about the Wicked Witch of the West, aka Elphaba.

Book Review: "How to Change Your Mind" by Michael Pollan
I had the entirely wrong idea about this book. I was reading on my phone when I finished the last book and wanted to start a new one. Thus, I quickly bought this on the cheap and started reading. I thought it was going to be about changing your mind, like actually changing it by using therapy techniques and the like. It's about LSD and psychedelics. But it's also about depression, anxiety, dying, terror, mythologies of humanity etc. Interesting and actually pretty well-written - I have absolutely no regrets of not reading the blurb when it came to this book even though I don't particularly agree with everything within. Let's take a look at what it is about then...

'The Running' Man and the Funny Thing About 'Woke' Movies.
The Joke About “Woke” Art Something that never fails to amuse me in the endless online outrage about so-called “woke” art is this: the movies that get tagged as “woke” are almost never showing us anything new.

Wicked for Good is a nonsensical term being marketed to our youth in a Disney film
Wicked For Good Does Not Compute In John Milton's poem Paradise Lost, Satan states, "Evil Be Thou My Good." This lets us know that good and evil are polar opposites. Whenever serial killers are discussed, the words evil and wicked are used to describe them. Why then is Disney blurring the lines with the new film Wicked For Good?

Book Review: "Scoop" by Evelyn Waugh
Yes I'm back to rereading some Evelyn Waugh. Scoop is one of those books where anyone who's read it has something nice to say about its wittiness, the way it tells the story and of course, Evelyn Waugh's amazing cast of characters. Often regarded after Brideshead as his best work, I've often read about this book in other texts by people like Christopher Hitchens who have hailed this book as a seminal text of the 20th century. Scoop, I can honestly say is a fantastic book that is a lot of fun to read. It has not only great wit and intellect, but also contains a storyline which is both immersive and one of those experiences that is practically unforgettable.

Plainclothes (2025)
Plainclothes is my kind of film. I take along my 1940s imaginary screenwriter persona, and she complains about not being able to smoke in cinemas. But I reassure her, reviews have been mostly positive, and it won an award at the Sundance Film Festival. I knew I wanted to see it from the trailer. It is a small budget, independent film, with a small cast, telling a story that could easily be overlooked or dismissed. My kind of film.
